At Toki, our utmost priority is ensuring that your referral program is managed safely without any fraudulent activity. With this in mind, we have set up a series of barriers, such as:

  • You (as a referrer) cannot refer yourself (as a referee)
  • The referree needs to be a first time purchaser for the referral to count
  • The referral code is only live for 24 hours so if a referral member sends a link to a friend, the friend must purchase in 24 hours

And more.

We block the ability for customers to do self-referrals via IP checking

Keep in mind that there are two parts to referrals:

  1. Discount code generation
  2. Rewards

When we generate a discount code, the customer is not authorized yet, so we don’t know which email they’re gonna use BUT we already need to generate and apply the discount code for them. Rewards happen after the order is created, therefore we are aware of the email in the system.

For rewards, we also check for the email address, if it’s the same with the referrer, then the system will block the reward.
