How to create an email based referral program using Toki

This article shows you the exact steps on how to create a classic email referral program.

By Default Toki’s referral program works without any discount codes using a referral link. However, there are settings we have available that you can adjust to do a classic referral program using email.

Reminder: To use this workflow you need to have the Klaviyo integration installed.

Here’s how this is done:

For the refer a friend component we have the email function included. To turn on this display you would need to add the Klaviyo Integration.

Head over to Klaviyo under Settings > API Keys > Create Private API Key.


The Essential permissions we need for the Klaviyo integration are:
Events, Profiles, and Segments.

Once the Integration is successfully connected, you are now able to choose Klaviyo as your primary source to send out emails for your referral program.

With this integration turned on there are 2 new triggers in Klaviyo that you should use to customize the email:

1) Toki Send Refer A Friend Invite:
This trigger contains the properties that your customer is sending to their friend that they refer to your store.



2) Toki Reward Created:
This trigger contains the discount code properties. So if you are doing a code based referral, you would use this trigger to send the discount code reward to your customer when their referral is successful.


Optional setup: If you are interested in showing your customers the referral program on the Order Thank You Page, you can use our post purchase component for that. Here is the guide on how to set that up.

For the post purchase component it is also possible to show the email referral option by turning on the email functionality. In the design setting for post purchase under Referral Block Type choose Email Block.
